Gods in Color combines elements of computer-generated imagery and history to create an innovative fashion photography project. By recreating ancient Roman and Greek sculptures of gods, this project brings new life to iconic artworks and invites the viewer to see them in a contemporary context. The project focuses on models with diverse skin tones styled in modern high-fashion outfits that complement the visual aesthetics of the sculptures.
There is evidence that suggests that many ancient Greek and Roman sculptures were initially painted or adorned with various colors, but these colors have faded or vanished over time. Romans had a great variety of skin tones within their Mediterranean world. Greek and Roman frescoes, mosaics, and painted ceramics reveal a fascination with black Africans and particularly Ethiopians. Therefore, it’s possible that white marble sculptures may have originally depicted individuals of diverse skin tones. The recent fading of colors in white marble sculptures has created a romanticized image of the ancient world, prioritizing the perceived beauty and flawlessness of white marble over the historical accuracy of the originals.
My attempt to recreate the colors and skin tones lost in these sculptures challenges the idealized perception of white marble and emphasizes the diversity and complexity of the ancient world, often overlooked or erased by Eurocentric perspectives.
